First published in 1866 and researched from material then not previously published. It gives an account of how witchcraft was viewed, from an early mention in 1164 of charges against Thomas a'Becket, through to the height of persecution of witches in the 17c.

The last witch burning took place in 1705 though isolated instances of the persecution of witches went on into the late 18c.
